For living on 1 pound a day the food doesn’t look so bad. it actually looks good! Thanks for sharing
Thanks, the start wasn’t very inspiring, obviously. I’ve just returned from getting the groceries for day 4 and it’s been a good “hunt”. As the month progresses and my pantry extends, I should be less and less limited in what I can prepare. It should be interesting to see just how far that pound stretches by the end of it!
It costs more than 10p for half an apple, an egg and toast!!! The egg is 20p, half an apple is usually 30p. This is more healthy than most £1 a day projects I have seen, but tiny portions and far, far more starch foods than I eat. You could not feed a growing teenager on this, for eg.
I’ve been abnormally frugal. If you check the blog around the time I made this, you’ll see how I did it (including receipts for all shopping I did the whole month!) The eggs were heavily discounted. I managed them for 50p for a box of 10 if I recall correctly. Not sure if that apple was bought separately or if I brought it from company breakfast at the time. Anyway, have a read. Thanks for your comment!
how have you got poyatoes in it as the cheapest, is £159 from aldi
Hi, 1.59 would be for an average bag of potatoes. There are at least three ways to get your potatoes for less, depending on the recipe they’re used in. The most obvious was what I did on the very first day: get a 20p packet of instant mash. For “Proper” potato, it’s possible to either go for loose potatoes, in which you get one baking potato when you go shopping. At ALDI, you can also get “sweet harvest” potatoes. As I’m writing this reply, they’re listed as 14p for a 560 grams tin. This translates to 38.9p per kg drained (and you won’t need to peel them!)
